      In theory, yes, but in practice it’s very difficult. As an Indonesian most jobs there would require you first obtain a green card to be able to legally work in the U.S. For a job working as a scientists it would depend on what science/research group you were working for. If an Indonesian company or university sent a scientific team there you could work for them. The U.S. operated research stations like McMurdo rent out access to teams from all over the work.

    Climate works like this in Ecuador: interandean valley dry summer season from June to September (occasional rains can happen though)...rainy season October to end of May with occasional dry spells. Coast dry season from around May to end of December, monsoon rainy season January to May...ocassionally strong monsoon season is EL NIÑO and unusually dry in rainy season is La Niña, ONLY on the Coast because it's influence of Pacific current. Amazon lowland region dry season December to end of February, rainy season March to November (strongest in June and July). Obviously in cloudforests on both sides of Andes it can rain anytime.

    • @FallofftheMap
      @FallofftheMap 19 днів тому

      @@andresleder7678 I think that is an oversimplification and also outdated. For example, all my neighbors in the Amazon say this year will be very dry from August to October in Napo province. I've lived and worked in all 3 regions of the country over the last 40 years and haven't seen drastic changes. But I've seen glaciers dissapear (Illinizas) and recede since my youth. Another thing to keep in mind is that a dry season doesn't mean it won't rain ocassionally and a rainy season doesn't mean there won't be dry spells. Your neighbors in Pichincha are correct because August 'till end of September early October is the NORMAL DRY SEASON in the interandean region, harvest and fallow time (planting season for corn and most native crops without irrigation is October to early December). As for your Napo neighbors it could be a cycle that has been discovered yet or just an oddball. The patterns are more or less the same, yes with some variations due to natural climate changes, cycles, earth tilt, etc. It is happening and will continue as it has over millions of years.

      Yeah, if I hire a caretaker for any of my properties it’s likely to be a foreigner so if there is any dispute we are at least on an even playing field in the legal system. I do occasionally pay my neighbors to help on my mountain property but I’m lucky to have a very honest and responsible family living next to me. I’ve slowly built a good relationship with them over the last 3 years. I’m pragmatic about it. The wife is great and always fair with me. The husband can occasionally get a little lazy and charge for more work than he actually did, but they also do a lot of small favors for me and help to make sure my property stays safe.

    Thanks, Jesse, for your thoughtful pieces on Ecuador. I’ve lived in Quito since July 2001, the first four years in Quito Tenis, the rest of the time, here in La Carolina (Calle Luxemburgo). Luxemburgo used to be almost all houses; now, it’s almost all increasingly expensive apartment buildings. I may be a fugitive from the law of averages but I’ve never been mugged/robbed in my time here. That said, conventional wisdom dictates that you don’t go into Parque La Carolina at night, As well, since about 2018-19 there’s been a marked increase increase in street vendors and street beggars, particularly along Republica de El Salvador and Avenida Shyris towards NNUU, so street awareness and caution is advised along those areas. Finally, in those areas, never use your cellphone out on the sidewalks or streets; there are very adept pickpockets out there, as well as two-person moto teams who will swoop in and snatch your phone if you’re unwary and close to the street.

      @@gabrielgodoi4565 you’re making a lot of assumptions. I don’t mind being considered an immigrant at all, but I don’t think the description is entirely accurate. Yes, from a legal standpoint I’m technically an immigrant, but that description isn’t the best nor is it the point of the conversation. Expats are a type of immigrant, sure, just as migrant workers are, but we have the ability to use a more accurate description. I have lived in Ecuador for 11 years, it’s my “home base,” but during that time I’ve also traveled to other parts of the world for work, sometimes for more than a year at a time. That’s quite different than a typical “immigrant” that moves to a new country and then builds their live in that new country. An expat is something distinctly different. Just as a migrant worker who travels to another country to work on farms during the harvest is better described as a migrant rather than an immigrant. A person that moves to a new country but doesn’t have the same sense of permanence there and still travels other places for work is better described as an expat than an immigrant.
